India's 12 AI Models Boom

India to Roll out 12 Major Indigenous AI Models Soon

At least 12 large-scale AI language models developed and trained by Indian Companies/Research Institutions will be rolled out in the upcoming couple of months. Instead of relying on global companies (e.g. Google or OpenAI), India will have the ability to develop AI Applications with Indian Technologies and Data. As with many things made in India, the revolutionizing of AI language processing technology is coming directly from India.

Essentially, these Indigenous Indian Models are "AI Chatbots" or "AI Assistants" specifically trained on Indian Data such as Indian languages, culture, and everyday lingo. Unlike Foreign Models that get confused when confronted with the mixture of Hindi and English (which we call "Hinglish") and/or Regional Dialects from within India, Indigenous AI Models will be able to process those languages seamlessly.

Researchers such as Sarvam AI (Developed by Sarvam), Krutrim(A Product of Ola's Company), along with many others, are dedicating very large amounts of resources to the development of these Models. Sarvam AI has begun teasing examples of 10+ Languages already within their model and Krutrim has indicated that they are currently developing capabilities for creating voice-enabled AI that will sound/feel like you are having a chat with your "Desi" (Indian) Friend.

Thus, this announcement represents a very positive trend for India's rapidly expanding Digital Economy which is expected to reach $1 Trillion by 2026; up until now, we as a country have been relegated to taking a back seat to other countries regarding Artificial Intelligence. The cost of importing AI Models, along with the associated risk of Data Leaks and Negative Biases is driving this trend to develop Indigenous AI Language Processing Systems in India.
