Before we can understand how to solve this issue, we first must examine the root cause of the trust crisis. The entire Internet is overrun with AI tools & services; while they can provide incredible advantages in terms of ease & speed, they also enable & empower bad actors with the ability to operate at massive scale through deception.
Ticket Scalping: Automated bots scrape tickets from a system in seconds before they are even posted online thus pricing out true fans of the events.
Social Media Slop: The majority of accounts on many major social media platforms are AI Bots talking only to each other creating a terrible User Experience.
Corporate Fraud: Deepfakes are being used to impersonate corporate executives for the purpose of authorizing fraudulent wire transfers.
We need to provide a means of verifiably stating, "I am an actual biological Human Being," without having to provide our Driver's License and/or Address to every single website we visit.
This method of verification is known as "Proof of Personhood," which is the basis behind World ID.
The New Version of World ID 4.0, A Digital Passport
Sam Altman participated in co-founding a previously named Project World Coin. Recently, they renamed it to Project World and eliminated the "coin" indicating a possible pivot from just cryptocurrency to being the basic identity layer on the internet.
World ID 4.0 is their new and improved way of providing a digital passport that proves you are human, without disclosing your actual identity.
How it works: When an app or website requests you to verify you are human, your phone will securely connect with that platform to verify your identity by saying, "Yes, this person is a unique human", while providing no other information about you, such as your name, email address, or any of your personal information.
Privacy is preserved using complex encryption methodologies (such as Zero-Knowledge Proofs). You benefit from being able to provide proof of identity without concern of being tracked.
Many large companies are currently adopting the World Digital Passport. For example, World is partnering with companies such as Zoom so that they can offer live deep fake detection and with Tinder to give verified human users special badges thus significantly reducing the catfish/bot problem.
Steps to Verify Your Identity: Humanity's Three-Tier Verification System
To ensure you're protected when using your digital identity, you can download the World App through the website world.org. There are different levels of verification, with a three-tiered system introduced at the time of the World ID 4.0 release.
1. Selfie Check (Tier 1) - The Selfie Check will be the easiest method for verification since it requires only a quick selfie via the app. The app will do a "liveness check" on the phone itself to verify that you are not a picture or video recording. This option is quick and easy to perform and has limited uses; therefore, it is good to verify people who want to only reduce basic spambot access from low-stakes applications.
2. The E-Passport Tap (Tier 2 - Project World ID 4.0, the 'Tap Passport')
The technology in this tier gets really exciting & is outstandingly impressive. Every modern government-issue passport has a small chip embedded in it that is referred to as an NFC (Near Field Communication) chip. The NFC chip is the same cryptographic signature/ chip that airport security uses to scan the passport when you are going through immigration.
With World ID 4.0, you'll simply tap your smartphone against the back of your passport using the NFC device in your mobile phone to verify the cryptographic signature found on your passport's chip. This will also provide immediate verification using the NFC infrastructure.
3. The Orb (Tier 3 - Project World ID 4.0)
The Orb is the highest, most secure, & arguably the coolest way to verify your identity. In order to be verified at Tier Three, you must go to a physical location where you will look at a glossy, bowling ball-sized biometric recognition - biometric device that is called The Orb.
When you look into The Orb, it will use multispectral sensors & infrared light to scan the unique patterns in your iris for about 10 seconds. Once The Orb performs the scan, it will convert the image into a secure mathematical code (known as an IrisCode), then send the verified proof of you to your mobile phone. And the original image will be deleted from The Orb after it has scanned your iris. The Orb provides you with the absolute, irrefutable proof that you are a one-of-a-kind person.
