Recently, Union IT Minister Ashwini Vishnaw revealed that the country has managed to acquire 18,693 GPUs to support an India-specific Large Language Model. Unlike existing models like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, this AI model will be tailored to India’s diverse languages and cultural context.
The challenge with global AI models is that they don't understand Indian languages, dialects, and cultural nuances. This is the reason why India wants to develop its own LLM so that the content generated by AI can better fit the local needs and have fewer biases.
What's Next
The Indian government has already called for proposals to develop AI models, which would take four to eight months. This fast cycle of development is likely to have India's AI model in operation by the end of the year.
