India's shipbuilding sector is expected to receive approximately ₹44700 million worth of investment from the Government of India (GOI) in 2023 to support the development of Ship Building Companies through Subventions, New Yards and Technology Upgrades to take the Indian Shipyard industry to World Class levels, which will also serve as a catalyst for additional investments from Companies who build Defence Vessel (Type) Ships, via Capacity Building. The following are three of the most successful and credible players in the Indian Shipbuilding Sector and also stand to benefit most from the government support provided by this Initiative, i.e. Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders, Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Cochin Shipyard.
Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders – Leader in Defence Shipbuilding
Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders (MDSL) is India's top-ranking Defence Shipbuilding Company having produced an impressive portfolio of Ships including: Destroyers, Frigates and an advanced Submarine Class and has contributed the highest percentage (75%) of Indigenously Built Content of ANY Defence Shipbuilding Company in India. MDSL expects to increase this percentage of Indigenously Built Content to more than 80% for its future P75I Submarine Project.
MDSL’s current Order Book is estimated to be valued at ₹27000 crore with an estimated Project Pipeline of ₹300000 crore worth of future Orders. Besides its Defence Shipbuilding, MDSL’s Strategy to diversify into Commercial Shipbuilding, places them in a strong position to create value and capture greater Market Share. MDSL is commencing operations in Sri Lanka due to an investment stake in Colombo Dockyard’s shipyard operation (limited capabilities). The Incentive of this Initiative will help subsidise MDSL’s ₹18000 crore Capital Expenditure Programme, including establishing a new shipyard in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu.
