The Future of Bikes is Here: How Ultraviolette is Leading India to Create a New Class of Electric Bikes

Most people have probably heard that true inventiveness only happens in Silicon Valley and China, right? For years we were raised with that idea and believed that true "deep tech" - the type of remarkable engineering that has the ability to change the way we live our lives - only came from those two regions in the world.

But that narrative is beginning to change and it is happening very quickly. India has evolved from being the world's back office or being a clone of the latest product and making it less expensive from India; to designing things using first principles.

When you look at the company in Bengaluru; isn't that a definite proof of how the narrative is changing. This company, Ultraviolette, is referred to by many as the "Tesla" of Electric Bikes.

As soon as we caught a glimpse of their E-motorcycles standing toe to toe with Roaring Tour Companies and the ever lastting Gasoline Motorbikes, we knew there was no way we could only read through the descriptions on specifications . We had to to see one up close and personal . So, off we sent a team directly to the company's headquarters and tried them out for ourselves . We were expecting a fast and enjoyable ride on the electric motorcycles, but were amazed that it would truly change the meaning of being a two-wheeler.

A Fighter Jet on Two Wheels

The Ultraviolette X-47 was without question the highlight of our trip! A true game changer in motorcycle design/technology – It does not just build on what has been done before.

Torque and top speed are very exciting in own right - however what stood out most for all of us at Ultraviolette is that the Ultraviolette X-47 is the world's first motorcycle with built-in RADAR intelligence.

Yes, I said RADAR on a motorcycle.

We are talking about "fighter jet" type technology in a motorcycle - RADAR WILL see/know what is out in front of you (up to 200 meters away) before you will ever know it is there because it reacts faster than you ever could.

This RADAR system is fitted to the rear of the Ultraviolette X-47 and has been specifically designed to give you an additional set of eyes.

Riding your motorcycle through a crowded highway may seem normal, but you have radar technology constantly scanning your surroundings that allows for blind spot detection and rear-end collision avoidance, as well as lane-change alerts and assist. Unlike your human eye, this technology does not blink and performs flawlessly, regardless of whether you are riding in a torrential downpour, an extremely dark night, or in fog.

This makes a difference that is more substantial than you think; for many years, two-wheel safety has been an after thought compared to that of four-wheels. Dual-processing systems such as airbags, crumple zones, automatic brakes, and lane keeping assists have been developed and utilized in automobiles, while motorcyclists have been left on the road with a helmet, potentially some type of ABS and themselves alone to ride. Ultraviolette has taken the step to completely change this. Ultraviolette's mission goes beyond just providing you with a high performing bike; they are designing a motorcycle that will proactively help you stay alive.

Charging/Infrastructure for Electric Vehicles

Charging is frequently cited as the largest barrier to ownership of electric vehicles. Range anxiety will always exist as long as people are afraid of running out of battery; however, it has long been common for manufacturers and governments to build out a network of charging stations worldwide.

Ultraviolette decided they didn’t want to wait around. Instead of relying solely on existing infrastructure, they chose to create their own. They did this by creating the highest power density onboard charger worldwide, thereby simplifying the entire charging process.

What does this mean for you? It means you don’t need a heavy, specialized charging station to charge up your bike. Whether you have an X-47 or not, you can simply drive your vehicle up to any normal household outlet and plug directly in. Riders now enjoy such an unprecedented level of independence and freedom due to this innovative product. You are no longer restricted to a single map of fast charging outlets; now the entire planet is your charging location.

Introducing Violette: Your Personal Jarvis

Onboard chargers and radars are outstanding pieces of engineering, but they’re also only scratching the surface. Combining hardware with innovative new software gives you your personal Jarvis on a motorcycle.

Ultraviolette debuted their new AI voice assistant called "Violette" at CES this year — this is a major advancement in software!

This is not going to require you to take your hands off the bar to push buttons or scroll displays; Violette will allow you to communicate with the motorcycle via your audio-enabled helmets; just say, “Violette!” and the bike will respond.

Do you want to switch from a relaxed cruising setting to a more aggressive riding position? Just ask Violette! Do you need to navigate to the nearest cafe? Just tell Violette! You can check tires, see your ride stats, and get proactive service alerts — using nothing but your voice — keeping your hands on the handlebars and your eyes on the road, Violette goes a long way towards being part of Ultraviolette’s distraction-free safety philosophy in an innovative manner.

Ten Years of Fixation

Are you curious how an Indian startup unexpectedly has made its way to the forefront of the world? It happened over time, not in one day. The founders started Ultraviolette seven years ago, having previously developed electric powered planes and drones. The influence of aviation on their current product, the F77, can be seen from the shape of the body to the design of the electronic components used on the motorcycle.

Going to market with their first product, the F77, was not based on EV trends and was developed after several years of intensive testing, destruction and improvements to reach the best version possible based. Because of this time spent developing the F77, it has become the first Indian electric motorcycle to have global distribution, and sells in 19 countries in Europe.
