Paris AI Action Summit: PM Narendra Modi to Pitch for Global AI Governance

Artificial intelligence is revolutionizing industries, economies, and global governance. There has never been a greater need for an international regulatory framework because AI is being adopted around the world at a pace unprecedented in history. As part of this vision, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is to address the Paris AI Action Summit on 10–11 February 2025 and is speculated to be stating their demand for global AI norms from all the countries. The India and France co-chaired summit will be a call to laying scientific foundations to bringing ethical standards to it with sustainable AI solutions hence the much need for collective global development.

Why does global AI governance matter?

AI is changing in a very fast pace, involving tremendous opportunities along with significant challenges. Without having a common framework, data privacy, bias of AI models, security risks and environmental impact from AI remain largely unaddressed. Recognising this, India has already been at the lead in pushing the standardization for AI in telecom, which found a global resolution adopted by International Telecommunication Union last year. Modi now proposes to take such efforts to the other AI-based sectors.

The three core objectives of the summit are:

India's Role in AI Policy & Global Leadership

Access to Safe & Reliable AI – Promoting Inclusive AI for Business, Government, and the Citizens at Large.
Developing Sustainable AI: The Energy- Hungry AI Systems and Green Innovations for Responsible AI Development.
Creating Global AI Governance – Harmonizing AI's growth with ethics in one unified regulatory framework.

India is emerging as a global tech superpower, with AI playing an essential role in the digital transformation initiatives underway. AI governance aligns with the long-term vision of the nation - to be a developed nation by 2047. Since 73% of Indian businesses are planning to increase AI adoption by 2025, it is the key to ensuring that AI is responsibly, inclusively, and safely used in the country.

By advocating for global AI norms, India aims to:

Influence global AI policy making and ensure representation in international regulatory bodies.
Promote AI-driven economic growth while mitigating risks related to privacy, security, and misinformation.

Strengthen AI partnerships with nations like France, the US, and other G20 members to drive innovation and research collaboration.
